Tasmania launches $2m booking system to stop ghost camping
Tasmania's new campground booking system launches in November at 10 parks, charging $18 to $35 per site to prevent spot-hoarding.
Tasmania is rolling out a $2 million Parks and Wildlife booking system from November 3 at 10 popular campgrounds including Freycinet and Mount Field. Ghost camping, reserving prime spots by pitching a tent without paying or staying, will become harder under the new rules.
Non-powered sites cost $18, powered sites $24, and premium powered sites $35. Groups of six or fewer pay only the site fee.
Anyone who cancels on their arrival day forfeits the full fee. Parks Minister Nick Duigan said the system invites genuine visitors rather than punishes them and gives real campers certainty their booked spot will be available.
The rollout coincides with new Spirit of Tasmania ferries arriving in late October, expected to bring 2.5 times more caravanners.
