Mildura raises a giant sultana to celebrate 100 years
Mildura unveiled a 5.25-metre sultana to celebrate 100 years of Sunbeam sultana production in the region.
The Victorian town of Mildura has joined Australia's quirky Big Things tradition with a towering sultana sculpture. Unveiled on Tuesday, the monument stands 5.25 metres tall.
That's roughly 525 times the size of a real sultana. It's equivalent to 260 Sunbeam packets stacked end-on-end.
Sunbeam, sold in Australian lunch boxes since the mid-1920s, commissioned it to celebrate the region's agricultural heritage. The company has been producing sultanas in the region for more than a century.
Mayor Ali Cupper said the Big Sultana honours the growers, workers and families who shaped the region over more than a century. The sculpture will be on display at Ornamental Lakes Park for a year, after which council will decide whether to keep it as a permanent tourist attraction.
