Geely launches sedan that runs on methanol, petrol, or electricity
The Xingyao 6 EF can run on methanol, petrol, or battery alone. Combined range is up to 1880 kilometres.
Chinese automaker Geely unveiled the Xingyao 6 EF, a plug-in hybrid sedan about the size of a Toyota Camry. The car can run on 100 per cent methanol, 100 per cent petrol, or electric power alone.
The electric-only range is 230 kilometres on a full battery charge. Combined range reaches 1250 kilometres using methanol plus battery, or 1880 kilometres with petrol plus battery.
A 1.5-litre engine pairs with a 140-kilowatt electric motor. Geely designed it for cold climates, with thermal efficiency of 48.15 per cent and cold starts down to minus 40 degrees Celsius.
The Xingyao isn't coming to Australia yet. Geely's Emgrand L petrol-electric hybrid is arriving in early 2027.
Methanol isn't available at most Australian service stations, though it's used in motorsport for its high octane rating.

Why it mattersOffers fuel flexibility and extreme range for cold-weather driving. But methanol fuel availability remains a barrier to adoption.
AustraliaNot arriving in Australia soon, but demonstrates the direction of hybrid technology; Geely's petrol-electric Emgrand L EM-i will launch locally in early 2027.
