Canberra's community independent movement is recruiting candidates for the 2028 federal and ACT elections. Voices of Canberra has formed a nine-member selection panel, while Voices for Belconnen and Gungahlin are seeking applicants for their nine-member panel.
Independent Jessie Price has already committed to running again in the federal seat of Bean. Candidates are still needed for federal seats Canberra and Fenner, and for ACT Legislative Assembly seats Ginninderra and Yerrabi.
Plans call for announcing a Fenner candidate by May 2027, and Ginninderra and Yerrabi candidates by October 2027. The push comes as Independent Senator David Pocock recently called for more community independents in parliament.
The movement gathered feedback from more than 700 community members on what makes an ideal candidate: honesty, integrity, and independence from party politics.
