Newcastle fire station demolished after more than 40 years in disrepair

The Charlestown fire station, built in 1985, was demolished in late September to make way for a new $9.7 million facility.

The old Lake Macquarie station had served for decades but was not fit for modern firefighting. The old station lacked privacy for female firefighters, had roof leaks, and problems storing contaminated gear safely.

The new design includes designated contamination zones, better privacy, more training space, and improved equipment storage. Work began after demolition in September.

Construction is expected to start early next year, with the station finished by early 2028. The upgrade is part of planning for the area's growing population and changing firefighting needs.
