Flat white prices hit $5.17 after surcharge ban

Flat white prices hit $5.17 in October, up from April, with one in five cafes raising prices after surcharge ban.

Coffee prices are climbing as the Reserve Bank's ban on card surcharges takes effect. The average flat white cost $5.17 in October, up from $5.01 in April and 6 cents from September.

One in five Australian cafes increased prices in October, according to the Small Flat White price tracker. Rising cafe costs include wages, rent, milk, beans, freight, and coffee cups.

Nearly 40 per cent of price increases were exactly 50 cents, with 20 cents the next most common. Most cafes charge round prices, so they jump to the next 50-cent or dollar mark when raising costs.

A payment company analysis found nearly 90 per cent of businesses that previously charged surcharges have not raised prices so far.
