Tradies restrain axe-armed man after carjacking attempt in Melbourne

A 29-year-old man armed with an axe attempted to steal a vehicle after an eight-car collision, but tradies chased and zip-tied him.

An eight-vehicle crash at Sydney Rd and Bolinda Rd in Campbellfield brought traffic to a halt on Thursday morning. One of the drivers, a 29-year-old man wearing a balaclava and gloves, got out armed with an axe and tried to carjack another motorist.

A ute struck him, but he got up and ran. A group of nearby tradies gave chase, tackled him and secured his hands with cable ties.

Police arrived and arrested him. The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Toyota he had tried to steal was itself stolen from Reservoir three days earlier.
