Jet skis give Perth surfers the power to launch aerial tricks
Twenty surfers will compete in Perth's first towed-in aerial contest on November 7-8, using jet skis to reach bigger jumps.
Red Bull Aeriality is a new kind of surfing contest at Scarborough Beach. Competitors ride jet skis into waves, release the rope, and launch high above the Indian Ocean.
Towing adds engine speed to the wave power, letting riders reach bigger jumps and land harder tricks than traditional surfing allows. The free event has 16 men and four women competing in head-to-head heats.
World Surf League junior champion Dane Henry will judge. Competitors are rated on innovation, height and progression.
WA surfing icon Taj Burrow, also judging, says air shows bring a different energy to regular contests.
