TasWater backs down on 500% sewerage bill increases
TasWater is reassessing sewerage charges that hit some businesses with 500 per cent bill hikes.
From July 1, Tasmania's water utility changed how it charges for sewerage, basing fees on the size of a property's water connection rather than actual sewage use. Businesses and sporting clubs with large connections but low usage were hit hardest.
One manufacturer's bill jumped from $630 to $3,800 a month, a 500 per cent increase. TasWater general manager Callan Paske said the utility has heard the feedback and is assessing changes to lessen the impact.
The company plans to adjust pricing for sporting clubs that use water primarily for irrigation, and any revised charges will be backdated to July 1. Water usage price rises continue as scheduled at 5.7 per cent per year.
