Canberra rookie Zach Bates finishes third at Bathurst 1000
Bates, 22, finished third after race leader Anton De Pasquale's car ran out of fuel late in the race.
Canberra's Zach Bates became the first rookie since 2001 to start the Bathurst 1000 from pole. The 22-year-old finished third, his first podium, in his first full season of Supercars racing.
Bates had mixed results this year, with no finish higher than ninth in 29 earlier races. Bates and his partner Aaron Seton, son of race legend Glenn, stayed in the top 10 all race.
Race leader Anton De Pasquale's car ran out of fuel late in the race, which moved Bates up. Bates called his first podium amazing, but said he was gutted not to win.
His next race is the Gold Coast 500, from 23 to 25 October.
