Newcastle loses grand final by one point to Roosters despite wooden-spoon season
Newcastle lost the NRL grand final 19-18 to the Sydney Roosters, capping a stunning season after finishing wooden spooners the year before.
Newcastle lost 19-18 to the Sydney Roosters at Accor Stadium on Sunday. The Knights completed a remarkable turnaround from last year's wooden spooners to Sunday's decider.
Coach Justin Holbrook said it was the hardest game he had ever watched. "We were just holding on the whole game," he told reporters.
"If you can win anything on heart and effort, then we definitely won that." The team played much of the match without several key players: Phoenix Crossland was suspended and Dylan Brown sidelined mid-season with injury.
Tyson Frizell suffered a busted rib during the game. Captain Kalyn Ponga said the youth coming through gave Newcastle evidence they could compete again next year.
"Nothing is given, we still have to earn everything we get," Ponga said.
