Doug and Barb mark 70 years of marriage with ring renewal

Doug Peskett, 93, and his wife Barb, 88, exchanged rings on their 70th wedding anniversary in Warrnambool on Tuesday.

Doug first met Barb in the lounge of his parents' hotel in the 1950s. Doug proposed on Christmas Eve 1955 and they married on October 6, 1956.

The couple lived across regional Victoria, Kaniva, Horsham, Robe, Portland and finally Warrnambool, raising two sons and working through illness and change together. When Doug developed a rare neurological condition, Barb worked night shifts in hotel kitchens to support the family.

"We had staying power," Barb said when asked the secret to their long marriage. "Always keep your sense of humour.

Don't take it too seriously." They received congratulatory letters from King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prime Minister Albanese and the Governor-General.
