Seven-year-old Olivia conquers camp adventures despite genetic condition
Seven-year-old Olivia Street, who has a genetic neuromuscular condition, completed a three-day camp adventure including flying foxes, scavenger hunts and campfire nights.
Olivia lives with collagen six related myopathy, a genetic condition affecting muscle strength. Neuromuscular WA's annual kids camp in Perth's Bickley outdoor recreation area gave Olivia a chance to tackle flying foxes, learn to start fires, meet native wildlife and make new friends.
The camp, themed Into the Wild, was designed as a treasure hunt for children with neuromuscular conditions, offering specialised equipment, support staff and overnight nursing care. Olivia said her favourite part was movie night with new friends.
Her mother Janelle said the camp gave Olivia a rare chance to experience independence away from home and connect with children facing similar challenges, something the family thought would be impossible given her support needs.
