Ballarat students win Anzac study prize trip to Vietnam war sites
Twelve Victorian students visited Vietnam war sites, including Cu Chi Tunnels and Long Tan Cross, as part of a state prize.
Seeing a place where history happened changes how you understand it. Amethyst May, 15, from Mount Clear College, and Bilyana Holloway, 18, from Loreto College Ballarat, were among twelve students picked statewide for the Premier's Spirit of Anzac Prize.
Over ten days, they walked the sites where Australian soldiers served during the Vietnam War. Amethyst had studied the war's history; visiting the actual sites made it real.
For Bilyana, a First Nations student and her college's Indigenous captain, the trip sparked thought about how war damages cultures and identity. Both said seeing a place in person taught them more than any classroom could.
