His Boy Elroy takes Wollongong burger crown in blind taste test

Three Wollongong restaurants named best-burger finalists were blind-tested, with His Boy Elroy's Fat Boy Burger winning on texture, bacon, and maple sauce.

The 2026 Australian Dining Awards named three Wollongong CBD restaurants as burger finalists: SoCo Kitchen and Bar, His Boy Elroy, and Uncle Georges. A blind taste test ranked each on cross-section, form, and texture.

SoCo's $19 cheeseburger offered a solid standard option with a sesame-seeded milk bun and house-made patties and pickles. Uncle Georges' premium wagyu and black Angus burger with bacon and pickles impressed with smoky sauce and crispy onion but fell slightly short overall.

His Boy Elroy's $24 Fat Boy Burger, which came with fries, won out with crispy maple bacon that tied everything together, special sauce that complemented the beef, and lettuce that added crunch. The surprise winner had the advantage of maple-hinted flavour and textural variety that the other two lacked.
