Ariarne Titmus faces online backlash over Sydney Sweeney sports ad criticism

Ariarne Titmus is an eight-time Olympic medallist and world record holder. Titmus criticised a sports prediction platform ad showing actress Sydney Sweeney barely dressed with sports gear.

Titmus called it an absolute joke and the furthest thing from sport. Titmus said it was a kick in the face to women who had dedicated their entire lives to their sport.

Titmus's social media post sparked immediate support from fellow Olympians and other female athletes, but also triggered a fierce backlash. She got thousands of hateful comments and messages, with some attacking her appearance for standing up.

Despite the backlash, she said she would do it again. She believed many of the messages came from bots.
