Beaconsfield miner Todd Russell leaves hospital to go home

Todd Russell survived the Beaconsfield mine disaster. He is leaving hospital after 8.5 months. He will spend his final days at home.

Todd Russell, 54, said he is leaving hospital to go home with family. He spent eight and a half months getting treatment.

He said years of pain, doubt, and setbacks left him with no more fight. Russell and co-worker Brant Webb were trapped underground by a rockfall on Anzac Day 2006.

They were found alive six days later. The rescue took another eight days.

In July 2024, Russell got some unfortunate health news and became sick. He started treatment at Launceston General Hospital in October.

But he chose to stop fighting. Before his illness, Russell worked as a firefighter and as a motivational speaker.

He openly talked about his mental health struggles after the mine disaster.
