Man jailed 30 months for armed siege, death threats and knife stand-off
Batty received 30 months jail for death threats, knife threats, and a domestic violence siege.
Batty threatened his on-and-off partner with death the day before the siege in June 2026. Daniel David Batty left a voicemail saying her head would come off her shoulders in 24 hours.
Batty also warned police he would use chemicals to blow up his Springdale Heights home. When officers arrived for a welfare check, he answered the door with a 40-centimetre knife.
He held it to his own throat and licked it while taunting the police. Specialist negotiators spent four and a half hours trying to convince him to surrender.
A tactical unit's arrival finally persuaded him to walk out. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
These included weapons offences, breach of a domestic violence order, intimidation, and preventing lawful detention. Judge Melissa Humphreys set a non-parole period of 15 months.
He becomes eligible for release on September 7, 2027.

Why it mattersThe lengthy sentence shows courts take seriously the growing pattern of threats, weapons, and breaches of domestic violence orders. It signals a tougher response to armed incidents linked to domestic violence.
AustraliaAustralian victims of domestic violence see this case as enforcement of protection orders and serious consequences for repeated breaches, though NSW court resources remain stretched.
