Top End artist Yung Milla crowned Voice Australia champion
The 23-year-old Darwin artist takes home $100,000 and a recording development package.
Yung Milla, real name Levi Nichaloff, claimed victory in The Voice Australia after two months of national broadcasts to millions. The Marranunggu rapper from Palmerston performed for judges including Melanie C, Ronan Keating, Richard Marx and Kate Miller-Heidke.
Yung Milla's semifinal rendition of Down Under, which sampled his own lyrics about growing up unsafe, drew 2.2 million Instagram views. Milla grew up in domestic violence and trauma; he credits his mother with showing him the right way.
Yung Milla opened the semifinal performance on the yidaki, the didgeridoo an instrument he grew up with. He plans to use his $100,000 prize to build a local studio for young people in the Top End to give the kids a voice.
