US congressman pushes bill to ensure gamers own digital games, not licenses
Rep Ritchie Torres is introducing the Power to the Players Act to give gamers permanent ownership of digital games and offline access.
Democratic congressman Ritchie Torres is introducing legislation that aims to protect gamers who buy digital games. The Power to the Players Act would require rules to be written that ensure gamers own their purchases.
They would stop gamers from buying revocable licenses. The bill also requires online games to work offline after servers shut down.
This lets players keep playing games they paid for. Torres said families save up to buy these games.
They should not lose them when a company closes servers. The bill comes after NBA 2K25 announced it would disable single-player modes when servers shut down.
PlayStation confirmed it will stop releasing physical games by 2028.
