ACT workers strike over 3% pay offer, demand cost-of-living wage rises
1000 union members struck over a government pay offer failing to match cost-of-living increases.
Two unions, CPSU and CFMEU, took 1000 workers off the job for two hours Thursday morning, marching on the ACT Legislative Assembly. The strike followed 12 months of bargaining over 17 pay deals.
The government has offered 3 per cent annual rises for three years, plus extra if inflation runs higher. Union members say that does not keep pace with the cost of living in Canberra.
A CFMEU official said the offer fails to help members struggling to pay bills and rent. The Australian Education Union has suspended planned strikes and now awaits a revised offer by 9 November.
