Gauff saves match point twice to beat Andreeva at US Open
Gauff beat Andreeva 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 after being one point from elimination twice in a chaotic quarter-final.
Coco Gauff's first four games at Arthur Ashe Stadium went to her opponent Mirra Andreeva, who claimed the opening set in 26 minutes. Gauff had strung together 20 consecutive sets won before losing that one.
Gauff struggled with 12 double faults and 42 unforced errors, mostly from her forehand. In a tense second-set tiebreaker, Gauff found herself match point down not once but twice.
She steadied herself and won the tiebreaker 7-6, then dominated the third set 6-2 to advance. The fourth-seeded American said she drew strength from watching Frances Tiafoe's comeback against Alex Michelsen the day before.
She extended her winning streak to 10 matches and reached the semi-finals for the first time since her breakthrough three years ago.
