Whale carcass draws sharks to City Beach, forcing closure
A whale carcass washed up at City Beach, drawing four sharks and forcing beach closure.
Local surf lifesavers found the carcass early this morning and immediately sounded the alarm. Four sharks have been spotted circling about 10 metres offshore, including two white sharks measuring 5 metres and 4 metres, plus unknown species at 3.5 and 2.5 metres.
City Beach is closed from Floreat Drain carpark to south of Bodmin Avenue. The Department of Primary Industries warns the carcass could continue attracting sharks to shore for days.
Mayor Gary Mack said the beach will stay closed until the carcass is removed. The closure follows a fatal shark attack at Sorrento beach, about 15 kilometres north, just 10 days ago.
