Pro surfer Caio Ibelli swaps championship waves for Mount Isa family life
Pro surfer Caio Ibelli moved to Mount Isa for his wife's medical career and lives almost 1,000 kilometres from ocean.
Caio Ibelli, 32, won the Surfing Champions Trophy in the Maldives last month. Caio is at home this month in Mount Isa in north-west Queensland's red dirt plains.
The former World Surf League pro spent nine years on the professional tour before retiring to start a family. Caio's wife completed her medical degree, and the move was her opportunity.
They have a one-year-old son, Thomas. Ibelli says the heat is intense, temperatures hit 38°C now and can reach 46°C.
The family has only visited the beach about six times since arriving. His next goal is teaching local kids to surf.
