Landslide blocks river, triggering massive flood in Nepal
A landslide blocked Nepal's Budhi Gandaki River. This caused a massive downstream flood. The flood swept away several houses and bridges.
In Chumnubri village, about 100 kilometres west of Kathmandu, a landslide dammed the Budhi Gandaki River on Sunday. The blockage caused the water to back up, then it surged downstream with force.
Several houses and two suspension bridges were swept away. A hydroelectric project was damaged.
Authorities ordered villagers living along the river banks in five districts to evacuate. The Budhi Gandaki is a tributary of the Trishuli River.
Downstream from another tributary, a glacier collapse caused a major flood in August. This flood killed 1,457 people.
Army and police rescue teams reached the area. They monitored the situation by helicopter.
