Defending Bathurst champion Matt Payne copped pit-lane penalty at halfway mark
Matt Payne, the defending Bathurst 1000 champion, received a pit-lane drive-through penalty after a spare wheel rolled out of control.
Matt Payne, the defending Bathurst 1000 champion, was hit with a pit-lane penalty at the halfway mark. A spare wheel rolled out of control behind his Ford Mustang.
A team member from Grove Racing ran behind the car to stop it. This exceeded the allowed number of people crossing the safety line.
The team member was also not wearing a mandated fire suit. Payne had already served a five-second penalty earlier in the race.
He forced David Reynolds off the track. Dick Johnson Racing held the lead at lap 81 with Todd Hazelwood driving.
Matt Stone Racing's Aaron Seton was in second place. Triple Eight held third position.
Track temperature had climbed to 40 degrees Celsius. This caused tyre blistering across the field.
