First land-clearing order issued under new federal environmental reforms
Woombinoo Station near Cairns becomes the first property issued an order to halt land clearing under Australia's new environmental laws.
Environment Minister Murray Watt announced an order against Woombinoo Station. The station is 70 kilometres south-east of Cairns.
The order was made under the Albanese government's reformed environmental protection powers. The order blocks clearing works across 1600 hectares.
This prevents sediment run-off from damaging the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The new rules brought high-risk farm land clearing under federal environmental law for the first time.
This is the first enforcement action taken. Landholders must now seek approval before clearing trees on private property that could affect nationally protected matters.
Farm groups have raised concerns about legal uncertainty around routine agricultural activities. The National Farmers' Federation and AgForce are calling for a one-year delay in implementation.
The reforms were designed to protect the environment and speed up approvals for renewable energy and housing.
