At least one severe cyclone expected in Queensland this season

Warmer sea temperatures will likely bring Queensland a category-3-or-higher cyclone this season, the bureau warns. Residents should prepare now.

Queensland's weather bureau has forecast at least one severe cyclone for this season. Warming sea temperatures give cyclones more energy.

A severe cyclone ranks category 3 and above. Usually one or two cross Queensland's coast each year.

Last season broke records. Two category 5 systems formed in the Coral Sea for the first time since 1970.

The state also faces heatwaves and below-average rainfall, especially until December. Bushfire danger is escalating.

Responses jumped 20 per cent in the first month. Firefighters attended almost 2,000 incidents since September 1.
