Melbourne to swing from 26C to 13C in spring's wild temperature whiplash

Temperatures soar to 26C on Friday, then plummet to 13C with snow by mid-week.

Melbourne faces extreme temperature swings as spring weather becomes volatile. Friday will reach 26C with plenty of sunshine, well above the October average of 20C.

By mid-week, the state will see snow on the ranges and temperatures back down to around 13C. The wild swings come from a battle between warm air building to the north and cold air lingering to the south.

Wind direction determines which wins each day. Recently, parts of Victoria recorded more than double their entire October rainfall in days, with the Wimmera and Gippsland hit hardest.

More significant rain is forecast next week alongside the colder air.
