Bendigo facing shortage of 176 barbers and hairdressers by 2034
Bendigo region will need 176 extra hairdressers and barbers by 2034. This is despite strong student talent entering the field.
Bendigo TAFE hairdressing and barbering students won five medals at WorldSkills Australia's Central Victoria championships, demonstrating a strong pipeline of talent. The hairdressing and barbering industry faces a staffing crisis.
The region had 706 barbers and hairdressers in 2024. By 2027, the Victorian Skills Authority predicts the area will need 27 more workers.
By 2034, that gap widens to as many as 176 more staff. Gold medallist Izabella Mills has already opened a home-based salon in Strathdale, building her client base.
Barbering gold winner Brock Clery is a second-year apprentice at 17. He hopes to open his own shop in Bendigo one day.
