Rutherglen loses its only childcare with two weeks notice
Rutherglen's sole out-of-school childcare program shuts on October 6 after five years of financial losses, leaving families stranded.
Rutherglen's only after-school childcare is closing its doors for good. Glenview Health, which runs the only out-of-school hours care program, gave parents just two weeks notice before shutting on October 6, just one day after term 4 starts.
The operator cites five years of "significant financial loss". Funding and fees simply don't cover the running costs.
About 15 to 20 children use the service at any time. Parents from across the region, including Corowa and Wahgunyah, depend on it.
Father of three Alex Scott said the notice is "pretty disgusting". He juggles work with his wife and three sons; they had to ask their employers for flexibility when the service briefly closed in July.
The program is the region's only option for families who can't collect children from school at 3.30pm, especially single parents and shift workers.
