Intense fire at Newcastle feed mill forces major firefighter response
Firefighters are fighting a major fire that started in a feed mill's dust control system near Newcastle.
Crews were called to the blaze at a Cardiff feed mill on Nelson Rd just after 10am on Thursday. The fire started in a dust control vent and spread through the exhaust ducts.
Up to 50 firefighters are working to control the blaze. Temperatures inside the mill have reached 500 degrees Celsius.
Firefighters say the challenge is accessing the fire as it spreads down the ducting to the grain grinder area. They're moving methodically through the pipes to prevent the fire spreading further or causing more damage.
Four people were on site when the fire started and have been moved to safety. Officials are monitoring the situation and expect the firefighting effort to be long and difficult.
Environmental protection measures are in place to prevent runoff into local waterways.
