Kev Kellaway signs off after five decades on Newcastle radio
Radio broadcaster Kev Kellaway spent close to 15 years at 2NURFM. He retired after more than five decades on air.
Kev Kellaway hung up the microphone this week after more than five decades in radio. The last close to 15 years were spent at Newcastle's 2NURFM.
Kellaway started at age just 15 at a Queensland station in August 1975, then moved through Queensland, New Zealand, Canberra and Bega before arriving at Newcastle's 2KO in 1981. At 2NURFM, Kellaway became known for dry humour and deep music knowledge.
Listeners felt his afternoon shows were like a friend keeping them company. Station manager Shane Peak said that connection went beyond the songs.
"For so many people he felt like a mate keeping them company on the way home," Peak said. Kellaway worked as a program director, hosted Drive shows, and managed the station's music.
He also volunteered with Bikers for Kids and supported the Newcastle community. He plans to spend retirement with family, golf, his motorbike, and guitar.
He'll finally fix that driveway he's been looking at for 10 years.
