Canberra Centre tightens security after teens throw rocks and food at shoppers

Teenagers throwing rocks and water balloons from viewing decks have prompted the Canberra Centre to boost monitoring of empty areas.

Teenagers have been throwing objects at customers from viewing decks at Canberra Centre over the past two weeks. Water balloons, food and rocks were hurled from a deck near the Dotti sign on Bunda Street.

Social media posts show the behaviour. A 19-year-old was hit by rocks during a job interview.

The centre said it treats safety seriously. It maintains 24/7 CCTV coverage and active security patrols.

Staff are reviewing footage. They will increase monitoring of sections that are often empty or unoccupied.

ACT Policing said it has not received any reports about rocks or water balloons being thrown. It will continue backing the centre.
