Motorists cutting through Reid pose risk, residents warn

Reid residents petition ACT Government to slow traffic through their neighbourhood as commuters use it to bypass main roads.

Motorists are increasingly driving through Reid to avoid congestion on arterial roads, sparking safety concerns from local residents. A petition to the Legislative Assembly called for traffic-slowing measures, including speed limit signs and timed traffic lights at Euree Street and Limestone Avenue.

ACT Greens MLA Rebecca Vassarotti said the suburb needs a systemic solution as Canberra grows. Navigation apps partly shoulder the blame, suggesting routes through residential streets to save just a few minutes.

The petition fell short with 100 signatures versus the 500 needed to reach a parliamentary committee. However, residents say they will consolidate efforts and broaden a new petition to include nearby Ainslie and Braddon, which face similar issues.
