A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near Korumburra in Victoria's Gippsland region early this month at about 2am, jolting residents awake and rattling homes on their foundations. Geoscience Australia recorded the quake.
At least five aftershocks have been reported in the area over several days. Seismologist Tanja Pejic explained that while 90 per cent of earthquakes occur at plate edges, stress transfers inland toward the plate's middle.
This can cause shaking in places like Gippsland. Gippsland is one of Australia's more active earthquake zones.
Severe earthquakes here remain rare. Mapped faults could potentially host large earthquakes, but they occur so infrequently most people experience none in a lifetime.
