Constable Mia Lay, 20, served 16 months with NSW Police before being killed in a patrol car crash in Redfern early Friday.
Constable Mia Lay, 20 years old, was killed early Friday when the marked police vehicle she was in struck a tree in inner-city Redfern. The constable and a 24-year-old male colleague were responding to reports of a car theft about 1:30am when the crash occurred.
The male officer was treated for facial injuries and taken to hospital in stable condition. Lay had served with NSW Police for 16 months.
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said Lay showed "exceptional promise and was well-loved" through her command. "She would have been an outstanding police officer," Lanyon said, calling the loss "a terrible tragedy."
The crash has been declared a critical incident and investigations are underway into its circumstances.
