Ex-detective reveals Darryl Young's decades of rural terror
An ex-detective revealed Darryl Young's decades of cattle theft, intimidation, and destruction before his 2022 murders.
Darryl Young is serving three life sentences with a 40-year non-parole period, believed to be Queensland's longest sentence ever given. Young killed his neighbours Mervyn and Maree Schwarz and Graham Tighe in 2022.
Fred Swift, a former Queensland stock squad detective, has now spoken publicly about Young's decades of criminal behaviour. Swift met Young in 1994.
He found Young was the main cattle theft suspect in the Bowen district. "Darryl was one of the worst people I ever dealt with," Swift said.
Young retaliated against anyone who reported him. He pushed one man's cattle yards into rubble with a bulldozer.
He drained molasses into a neighbour's creek. Young was convicted of stealing 147 head of cattle in 2006 but served only minimal time.
The community lived in fear of him before the shooting.

Why it mattersThe case shows how years of reported criminal behaviour can go unpunished due to resource limits. Then it erupted into violence. This raises questions about how rural communities are protected.
AustraliaQueensland communities in remote areas may question whether police resources are adequate to respond to long-running disputes and intimidation before they turn deadly.
