Neighbour stops arson attack just days after street fire kills family home
A neighbour woke to the smell of petrol and stopped two attackers pouring fuel on a driveway.
A neighbour in Abbotsford, Sydney, woke to the smell of petrol about 3:30am on Saturday and spotted two people spraying paint and pouring what appeared to be fuel on a house driveway. The neighbour yelled out, forcing the pair to flee in a dark-coloured 4WD or SUV before they could light the accelerant.
Police found jerry cans and fire-starting materials left behind at the scene. The home is occupied by a woman in her 60s, who was unharmed.
The incident comes just days after another house on the same street was destroyed in an alleged arson attack on Tuesday, which injured four people. A 17-year-old boy was charged over that fire.
Police are increasing patrols in the area and treating the attacks seriously.
Why it mattersTwo arson attempts in days on the same street show an escalating danger to residents, and quick action by neighbours can save lives.
