Hobart hotel approval overrides community opposition
Tasmania's planning commission approved a $65 million, 155-room hotel by Chinese developer Chambroad despite years of community resistance.
The Tasmanian Planning Commission has approved a five-star hotel at Kangaroo Bay in Bellerive on Hobart's eastern shore. Chinese developer Chambroad will build a 155-room hotel with restaurants, bars, a wellness centre and new public spaces.
The project, worth $65 million, has faced years of delays and strong community opposition. The local Clarence City Council voted last year to buy the land back and is currently in the Supreme Court fighting to do so.
Council candidate Brendan Blomeley said the state government and developer had "flagrantly disregarded" the community's views. Chambroad says the project will boost tourism and create jobs in the area.
