Mater pathology Brisbane cuts 400 jobs, outsources services to external
Mater is outsourcing pathology at its Brisbane and Springfield hospitals, affecting more than 400 staff over the next 18 months.
Mater is moving pathology services at its Brisbane and Springfield hospitals to two external providers: Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Pathology Queensland. More than 400 staff will be affected over the next 18 months.
Over 100 positions will be lost in the next two months, with most remaining jobs ending in 2027. Mater said rising costs and Medicare fees that haven't kept pace with expenses forced the change.
The move will free up resources for direct patient care. Mater hospitals in Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and the Gold Coast already use external pathology services and won't be affected.
