EYCI jumps to four-year high as spring rains boost cattle prices
The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator hit 1045.5c/kg, its best level since October 2022, lifted by spring rains.
Recent rainfall has sent the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator to its best level in nearly four years. The indicator reached 1045.5c/kg, up from a September low of 906c/kg when dry weather depressed the market.
Good falls of 50 to 200mm across key spring regions from Dubbo to Roma and into Queensland have given producers confidence. Producers expect the upside to continue if more rain arrives over the next 10 days or so.
But gains likely won't match the 20 to 30 cent jumps of recent weeks. Younger cattle and quality heifers have seen particularly strong price jumps.
Many producers are now holding stock to gain more weight before selling early next year.

Why it mattersCattle prices directly affect farm income and purchasing power across Australian agriculture. Better prices encourage restocking and support regional economies dependent on livestock.
AustraliaAustralian livestock producers, especially in NSW and Queensland, now face stronger market conditions and are making decisions to hold and feed cattle longer, affecting supply into 2027.
