30km/h speed limit trial starts on Chapel Street and Melbourne suburbs
Stonnington Council will trial 30km/h speed limits on Chapel Street and five suburbs from October 19.
Starting October 19, Stonnington Council will trial 30km/h speed limits for 18 months. The trial covers Chapel Street, Prahran, Toorak, Armadale, Malvern and Glen Iris, areas that have schools, bike routes and shopping precincts.
Research shows that pedestrians hit at 30km/h have about a 90 per cent chance of surviving. At 40km/h, about 60 per cent survive.
At 50km/h, about 10 per cent survive. Between 2020 and 2024, Stonnington had 1,500 crashes.
These caused seven deaths and 564 serious injuries. Data from other areas with 30km/h limits showed strong results.
All crashes dropped by 51 per cent. Serious crashes fell by 70 per cent.
Why it mattersLower speed limits can double how many pedestrians survive. At 30km/h, 90 per cent of people survive, compared to only 60 per cent at 40km/h.
AustraliaIf successful, the trial could lead to more 30km/h zones across Melbourne and other Australian cities where protecting vulnerable road users is a priority.
