Birdwatchers swarm Norfolk village to spot rare nutcracker, then give back
About 150 birdwatchers flocked to Mundesley in Norfolk after a northern nutcracker appeared, and raised money for the local lifeboat charity.
A rare northern nutcracker was spotted in a Norfolk garden on Friday, the first seen in the area since 1968. By Sunday, about 150 enthusiasts had crammed into the small village to see it, disrupting bus services and clogging roads with parked cars.
A villager suggested raising money for the Mundesley Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat as thanks for the chaos, and Wayne Glossop from South Yorkshire set up a crowdfunding page. In-person donations hit more than £530, and Glossop's online fundraiser added more than £1,200.
Birdwatchers said the move challenges their reputation as disruptive outsiders. The nutcracker had not been widely spotted in the UK since 1991.
