Creswick, Victoria hosts Day of the Dead to tackle death taboo

Creswick's Dia de los Muertos event tomorrow raises money for Shannon's Bridge. The charity supports terminally ill people in rural areas.

Creswick comes alive tomorrow with Dia de los Muertos, also called Day of the Dead. This colourful celebration aims to break Australia's discomfort with discussing death.

It also raises money for Shannon's Bridge, a palliative care charity. The event features live music, remembrance dancing, food stalls, and conversations with palliative care nurses about end-of-life options.

Shannon's Bridge was founded after Shannon McKnight, who died with leukaemia seven years ago at the age of 19. Her wish was to go peacefully in her Mount Glasgow home, despite limited access to palliative care.

More than 150 families use the charity's services each year, but rural patients often fall through healthcare cracks. The charity needs funds for specialist beds that cost up to $12,000.

It also needs basic medical supplies. And it needs a replacement truck damaged by recent vandalism.

Event coordinator Rhiannon Riske said the gathering has a clear goal. It aims to make death a less scary subject to discuss.

Communities where taboo still blocks honest conversations need this most.
