Search team finds trace of Melbourne hiker lost in Peru's remote range
Jordan Yap, 30, from Melbourne, vanished on a solo hike in Peru's Huayhuash mountains and missed his flight home Thursday.
Jordan Yap left a hostel in Huaraz on September 14 to hike alone through Peru's Huayhuash region for ten days. Vinh Dao, Jordan Yap's father, said the last message from his son was that he would be off the grid.
Yap was supposed to check into a hotel on September 23 and catch a flight the next day, but he never arrived. Vinh Dao contacted Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is now helping the family.
A private mountain rescue team was hired and assembled searchers at 3am Melbourne time. On their second day of searching, the rescue team identified someone they believe was Yap in the mountains.
The family is preparing to travel to Peru if needed. Yap is an experienced hiker, but this was one of his first solo trips.
