Two South Coast beaches rated unsafe for swimming
Two South Coast beaches recorded poor water quality grades; 40 of 45 assessed sites rated good or very good.
Two Illawarra beaches have dropped to poor water quality ratings in the latest State of the Beaches report. Surf Beach at Kiama fell from good to poor, showing only 51 per cent of wet-weather samples safe for swimming, down from 90 per cent in dry weather.
Surf Beach in Eurobodalla has remained poor for six straight years. Stormwater pollution is the main cause at both sites.
Wollongong City, Shellharbour and Warrain beaches led the region with some of NSW's highest water quality grades. Of 45 South Coast locations assessed, 40 recorded very good or good ratings, and swimmers can consult Beachwatch for real-time sample data and pollution forecasts.
