About 40 memorial plaques stolen from Hunter Valley cemetery
Thieves stole about 40 memorial plaques from Gordon Williams Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Aberdare overnight.
Police are looking into the theft of about 40 plaques from a cemetery in the Hunter Valley. The plaques were stolen between 5pm on October 6 and 9am on October 7.
The plaques came from Gordon Williams Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Aberdare. Families who lost loved ones no longer have these memorials.
One woman posted on social media asking for the plaques back. Her mother's plaque was taken.
Her father's late wife's plaque was also taken. Cessnock City Council is checking the damage.
It will call families to explain what happened. Similar thefts happened in Newcastle.
A heritage expert called them a "sacrilegious act" that disrespects shared history and culture.
