Wollongong man sentenced to community order for drink-driving near pedestrians

Cody Taylor-Strange, 25, pleaded guilty to high-range drink-driving after nearly hitting pedestrians in a car park.

Cody Taylor-Strange, 25, of Bulli pleaded guilty in Wollongong Local Court to high-range drink-driving. He nearly hit pedestrians at a Hungry Jack's car park in Figtree on May 31.

Police found him slumped across the driver's seat of his brother's white Toyota Hilux. He had slurred speech and alcohol on his breath.

Cody Taylor-Strange was under an interlock order, a device that stops driving after drinking. He deliberately drove his brother's vehicle, which did not have the device.

At the police station, he blew 0.178, more than three times the legal limit of 0.050. Judge Geraldine Beattie said his behaviour was high in danger and a risk to innocent lives.

She gave him a 15-month intensive correction order and ordered him to complete 250 hours of unpaid community service.

Why it mattersThe sentence shows courts take dangerous drink-driving seriously when it puts pedestrians at risk. This is true when a driver ignores safety orders.

AustraliaThe case reinforces the risks of drink-driving in Australian communities and the legal consequences for high-range offences.
