Quinbrook's 520-megawatt battery sparks data centre fears at Uriarra

The battery would cover a 60-hectare footprint, 10 hectares bigger than Uriarra Village.

Opponents fear a big battery on Uriarra Station could be a step toward a data centre. Quinbrook bought the 1200-hectare property in May and has proposed a 520-megawatt battery there.

The battery would be twice the size of the Williamsdale battery, one of the largest in the country. Resident Erin East said Quinbrook might not stop at a battery.

Ms East says Quinbrook's battery in Brisbane, the same size, is used to power a large data centre. Quinbrook has not yet lodged a development application for the project.

Construction would take 36 months, with trucks clogging Uriarra Road, the only way in and out. Quinbrook says a fire is highly unlikely because of multiple layers of safety design.

A community meeting is set for Saturday 17 October, 9 am to 12 pm, at Uriarra Village Community Centre.

Why it mattersResidents and visitors could face 36 months of heavy truck traffic on Uriarra Road, the only route in and out, if it is built.

AustraliaQuinbrook must still address fire, noise, traffic and heritage questions in its development application.
